EMBASE Drugs and Pharmacology Reloaded to Reflect 2000 Vocabulary

With the reload of the new 2000 EMTREE, the annual vocabulary maintenance of the EMBASE Drugs and Pharmacology (EMPS) database has been completed.

New Fields

EC        EMBASE Section Heading
The EMBASE Section Headings (EC) field contains the section assignment numbers that corresponds to the Excerpta Medica Abstract Journals and Literature Indexes. There are fifty-two codes indexed as three digit codes (for example, 001 through 052). To search this field, enter the desired code, such as 032.ec.

Note: EMBASE Section Headings (EC) replaces the Drug Classification field with this reload.

MS        Molecular Sequence Number
The Molecular Sequence Number (MS) field contains an acronym for a source of molecular sequence data and a sequence accession number documented by the source. Each acronym is preceded by a weighting of A or B in parentheses. The weighting of A is assigned to the sequence numbers whose submission to a molecular sequence database is announced in the document indexed. The weighting of B is assigned to sequence numbers that are referred to but not submitted by the document.

To search this field, enter the sequence accession number. The search can be combined with the source and the weighting. For example, you could enter K00083.ms and A.ds. to retrieve results in which K00083 is announced in the indexed document. The field displays in the citations as follows.

        (B)Genebank: K00083; (A)EMBL: X1614; (B)SWISSPORT: P25808.

SL        Summary Language
The Summary Language (SL) field contains up to three of the language(s) of the summaries printed in the original document.

The summary language name appears in the index as a 3-letter code (such as fre for French). Often, the codes are the first three letters of the summary language name.

DV         Device Trade Name and
DM        Device Manufacturer
The Device Trade Name (DV) field contains the medical device trade names assigned to the records. The Device Manufacturer (DM) field contains the device manufacturer name associated with the Device Trade Name. Device Trade Name and Device Manufacturer display together in the citation.

Note: During 1998 and 1999, the Device Trade Name and Device Manufacturer were indexed and displayed in the Drug Trade Name (TN) and Drug Manufacturer (MF) field for drugs. With this reload, Drug and Device Trade Names and Manufacturers are indexed separately.

Changed Fields
DC        Drug Classification
As mentioned above, the EMBASE Section Headings (EC) field has replaced the Drug Classification (DC) field.

PT        Publication Type
The Publication Type (PT) field now contains additional information concerning the item type of the original document. The item type information is utilized from 1991 forward. Also, citations now indicate whether the original document was an Article, Conference Paper, Editorial, Erratum, Letter, Note, Review, or Short Survey.

To search this field, enter the appropriate search term, such as conference paper.pt. or review.pt.

Year 2000
The following fields have been modified for Year 2000 compliance.

New EMBASE Segments
As part of the 2000 reload, new segments have been created for EMBASE and EMBASE Drugs & Pharmacology (EMDP).
