Title
Adult children of alcoholics and the experience of the imposter
phenomenon: The development of the "false self" in a dysfunctional
  family system.
Source Document
  Dissertation Abstracts International, 51(8):4070-B, 1991.
Publication Year
  1991.
Abstract
The current study investigated the development of the "false self" in
terms of the imposter phenomenon for adult children of alcoholics (
ACOA) compared to adult children of non-alcoholics (ACONA). The
construct of individuation for ACOAs and ACONAs was examined and
clarified by relating it to the imposter phenomenon, and theoretically
grounding this variable from the perspective of object relations
within the family system. This correlational study examined
relationships between (a) growing up in a alcoholic home, (b) levels
of individuation, (c) degree of experience of the imposter phenomena,
  (d) current psychological stress, and (e) intergenerational intimacy.
Results indicated that individuation within a family system and
experience of the imposter phenomenon (IP) were negatively and
significantly related to both ACOAs and ACONAs, while ACOAs
experienced significantly higher levels of IP and lower levels of
individuation than ACONAs. ACOAs also reported significantly lower
levels of intergenerational intimacy compared to ACONAs. Although
results indicated a significant and positive relationship between IP
and psychological distress, as a significant and negative relationship
between IP and psychological distress, ACOAs did not report
significantly higher of current psychological distress compared to
  ACONAs.

Abstract
Previously reported data have demonstrated the effectiveness of the
Teams-Games-Tournaments (TGT) alcohol education program. The followup
effects of the program as compared with the traditional instruction
and no instruction control groups are reported upon. Followup data
indicate that the TGT students maintained previous positive changes
while the traditional and no-instruction groups showed little or no
change. Issues in the followup of students are briefly discussed. 30
