The NTIS (National Technical Information Service) database is the major resource for locating U.S. Government sponsored research reports and studies in the physical sciences, technology, engineering, biological sciences, medicine and health sciences, agriculture and social sciences. Various classification systems enhance subject retrieval. Material can also be searched by corporate source, patent number and CAS registry number. NTIS can be of particular value for scientific and technical professionals and students, or for anyone involved in government research and contracting.

Institution Institute for Computer Applications in Science and Engineering, Hampton, VA.; 054882000 410183 Title Utilization of Coupling Effects in Compensator Design for Structural Acoustic Systems. Year of Publication Oct 1996 Abstract The quantification and utilization of coupling effects in a prototypical structural acoustic system are examined in this paper. In typical systems, the coupling mechanisms are manifested in two ways. The first leads to the transfer of energy from an ambient field to an adjacent structure and is often responsible for exogenous structural excitation. The second involves the transfer of energy from the vibrating structure to an adjacent field. This is the source of structure borne noise and is ultimately the mechanism through which structural actuators are utilized to attenuate noise. The examples presented here demonstrate that in fully coupled systems, both mechanisms should be incorporated to accurately model system dynamics. The examples also illustrate advantages and limitations of compensators which utilize the accurate modeling of the structural coupling. National Security and International Affairs Div.; 010682029 413789 Title Electronic Warfare: Additional Buys of Sensor System Should be Delayed Pending Satisfactory Testing. Year of Publication 27 Sep 1996 Abstract The General Accounting Office (GAO) reviewed the Army's $1.55 billion program for acquiring the Intelligence Electronic Warfare Common Sensor (IEWCS) System. GAO's review focused on determining whether the Army was taking necessary measures to ensure that the system demonstrated acceptable performance before committing to its production. GAO conducted this review under our basic legislative responsibilities and are addressing this report to the committees of jurisdiction. The report identifies problems and calls for corrective action that the Department of Defense (DOD) has indicated an unwillingness to take. GAO is suggesting that Congress may wish to take the necessary action to ensure that the DOD addresses the problems GAO has identified.
