Periodical Abstracts Research II (PERI)

Scope

Periodical Abstracts is a complete general reference resource that contains indexing and abstracting to significant articles appearing in top general and academic periodicals, as well as full text from more than 600 journals from 1986 to the present.

Covered topics include current affairs, business and industry news and analysis, cultural events and issues, academic topics of general interest, and editorial material that includes commentaries, sports, leisure and travel information, and reviews of books, concerts, exhibitions, films, restaurants and theater. The database currently contains more than two million records. Each record provides full bibliographic information, index terms, document delivery information and a summary of the article.

Ovid features include the following: company, product and personal name indexes; highly specific publication type limits, including those which indicate whether a book, restaurant, performance or event was reviewed favorably; the ability to sort search results by length of full text and numeric dates (not just years), and completely searchable full text.

Searching the PERI Fields

The following alphabetical list provides the two-letter label, the relevant alias, and at least one example for all searchable PERI fields:

=====        ============
Label Name/Example
=====        ============

AB Abstract [Word Indexed]
             animal adj5 care.ab.
             central park west.ab.

With the exception of critical reviews, every citation in Periodical
Abstracts contains a brief, informative abstract (AB) summarizing the
content of the article.

Stopwords, such as "of" and "the," are not included in the index.
British variant spellings, other than proper names, have been converted
to their American counterparts.

AD Date of Publication [Phrase Indexed]
1995 apr 30.ad. (months are abbreviated)
             1996 spring.ad.

The Alphanumeric Date (AD) field contains the article date of
publication and is displayed as part of the Source (SO). For date
searching, it may be more efficient to search the Numeric Date (ND).

AF All Searchable Fields
             discovery channel.af.
             cable television.af.

All Fields (AF) is an alias for all of the fields which occur in the
source documents, including value-added fields such as subject headings.
The only thing excluded from an ALL fields search are fields such as
"heading word" (HW) which are created by the loading process and do not
actually appear in the record.

AN, UI Accession Number [Phrase Indexed]
             03014305.an.

The Accession Number (AN) field contains a unique 8-digit number that
identifies each record.

AU Authors [Phrase Indexed]
             safire william.au.
             safire $.au.

The Author (AU) field contains all of the authors of an article or
publication. The author names are entered into the index in the format
of last name followed by first and middle names or up to two initials,
as they appeared on the original article. Thus, a person named James
Charles Smith may appear as Smith James C, Smith J. Charles, Smith JC or
Smith J.

Enter the last name, or if it is a common name, enter the last name, a
space and first initial.

CO Company Names [Word Indexed]
             ibm.co.
             rjr adj3 nabisco.co.

The Company Name (CO) field contains the names of companies and
organizations discussed in the article.

Search this field by entering the single most descriptive word
(microsoft, not corporation), and try using both full spellings and
abbreviations.

DD Document Delivery
Retired as of entry week 9948
-display only-

DE Descriptors (SH, HW, PN)
             business.de.
             statistic$.de.

The Descriptor (DE) field is an alias for all of the fields in the
database which contain subject information and which are appropriate for
a subject search.

The Descriptor field in Periodical Abstracts includes Subject Headings
(SH), Personal Names (PN), Products (PR) and Companies (CO).

EW, UP Entry Week [Phrase Indexed]
             9537.ew.

The Entry Week (EW) field contains a 4-digit number in the format YYMM
representing the year and week in which an item was entered into the
Periodical Abstracts database.

GL, GN Geographic Location [Word Indexed]
             japan.gl.
             north korea.gl.
             texas.gl.

The Geographic Location (GL) field lists the parts of the world
discussed in the article.

HW Heading Words [Word Indexed]
             appearance.hw.
             graphics.hw.
             (computer and graphics).hw.

Searching for a Heading Word (HW) is useful when you want to retrieve
every subject heading that contains a particular word. Only single word
terms may be entered.

IP Issue/Part [Phrase Indexed]
             "23".ip.

The Issue/Part (IP) field contains the issue or part of the journal in
which the article appeared.

Issue/Part is displayed as part of the Source (SO) field.

IS ISSN [Phrase Indexed]
             0003 0007.is.

The ISSN (IS) field contains the International Standard Serial Number
(ISSN) for the journal in which the article was published.

             communications of the acm.jn.
             utne Reader.jn.
             consumer reports.jn.

The Journal Name (JN) field contains the full name of the journal in
which an article was published.

Journal names are indexed as phrases. To view journal titles in the
index, enter as many of the words or letters in a journal name as are
needed to distinguish it from other journals.

Stopwords such as "of," when they appear within a journal name, ARE
included in the index, but leading articles ("A", "An" and "The") are
not.

JW Journal Word [Word Indexed]
             people.jw.
             acm.jw.
             utne.jw.
             consumer.jw.

The Journal Word (JW) field contains individual words from every journal
name in Periodical Abstracts. Searching for journal word is useful when
you want to retrieve every journal name which contains a particular
term, such as "literature."

The index does not display and stopwords such as "the" and "of" have
been omitted.

LT, WC Length of Full Text (Number of Words) [Phrase Indexed]
             0000100.lt.

The Length of Full Text (LT) field contains the word count for each
article that has full text available online.

ND Numeric Date of Publication [Phrase Indexed]
             950430.nd.
             9610$.nd.

The Numeric Date (ND) index contains 6-digit dates of publication for
every article. Only the Alphanumeric Date, however, is displayed as
part of the Source (SO).

To search for all articles published in a particular month and year, you
can truncate the numeric date after the first four digits: 9406$, for
example, will retrieve every record published in June 1994.

NT Notes [Word Indexed]
             table.nt.

The Notes (NT) field contains descriptive notes about the article, such
as reference information and whether maps, charts or graphs are
included.

The Notes field is displayed as part of the Source (SO).

PG Pagination [Phrase Indexed]
             "101".pg.

The first page of the journal issue in which an article appears is
indexed in the Page (PG) field. Often a journal title combined with a
beginning page number is enough to retrieve an accurate citation.

Page is displayed as part of the Source (SO) field.

PN Personal Names [Word & Phrase Indexed]
             pitt brad.pn.
             pitt adj2 brad.pn.

The Personal Name (PN) field contains the names of prominent individuals
discussed in an article. Personal names appear in the index last name
first. For deceased individuals, years of birth and death are given,
and, in instances where one individual might be confused with another,
the person's occupation appears as well.

PR Product Names [Word Indexed]
             client-server.pr.
             windows 95.pr.

The Product Name (PR) field contains the brand-specific names of any
products discussed at length or reviewed in the article.

To search for a particular product, enter as much of the name that you
know, for example, "walkman" or "saturn." To retrieve broader coverage
of a particular kind of product, search the Subject Heading (SH) field.

PT, AT Publication Type [Phrase Indexed]
             obituary.pt.
             editorial cartoon.pt.
             product review unfavorable.pt.
             restaurant review$.pt.

The Publication Type (PT) provides an editorial classification for every
type of article in the database. Examples include feature articles,
speeches, interviews, business reporting, instructional material and
various kinds of reviews. Note that review types must be truncated
or specified in full.

SH Subject Headings [Phrase Indexed]
             personal appearance.sh.
             computer graphics.sh.

numbers, pagination, publication date and, when available, the
descriptive notes.

TI Title [Word Indexed]
             richest people in america.ti.

The Title (TI) field contains the title of an article as it appeared in
the print publication.

Stopwords such as "of" or "the" will display in the document title, but
do not appear in the Title index. However, the word "a", which is a
stopword in other fields, can be searched in the title.

TX Full Text [Word Indexed]
             falling interest rates.tx.
             interest rates adj10 fall$.tx.

Starting in 1992, Periodical Abstracts began providing the original full
text for many of the articles it indexes. This text (TX) field is fully
searchable and appears in the default document display.

If the hard copy of the text contains graphs or tables that can't be
displayed, the omissions are noted. Stopwords such as "the" and "of" are
ignored for purposes of searching.

TW Text Word (AB, TI, TX)
             employee testing.tw.
             competitive intelligence.tw.

Abstract
The technology of the Internet means that a newspaper can post its
classifieds for a week or so, then take them offline--a procedure
traditional online hosts have great technical difficulties doing.

Companies, regardless of why they're in business, have one thing in
common: They need people. For most companies (really small companies
are the exception), this means hiring employees.

The typical pattern for filling positions is to post the job
internally, then list it in the newspaper and/or relevant trade
press. This generates a candidate pool from which the company
selects individuals to interview and hire.

There is absolutely no evidence that combining the 1990's fad of Web
browsing with the television fad begun in the 1950's is a workable
idea, but profitstarved TV manufacturers and Silicon Valley
entrepreneurs are joining forces to test the idea in a large-scale
  way.

Probably the most persuasive force in that direction is WebTV
Network, which has signed Sony and Philips (Magnavox) to supply
set-top boxes to let consumers surf the Internet on their
large-screen TVs from their easy chairs. The box provides on-line
access and email service to TV users, and has a slot for smart-card
  financial transactions.
