SPORTDiscus (SFDB)


Scope

The SPORTDiscus covers both serial and monographic literature in the following areas of sport: recreation, exercise physiology, sports medicine, coaching, physical fitness, the psychology, history and sociology of sport, training, and conditioning. Seventy percent of the database consists of periodical articles.

The English Abstract (AB) field includes the English-language abstract
for Research or Advanced level articles and book chapters. Annotations
are sometimes supplied for basic and intermediate level documents. The
English Abstract field may contain contents notes for research or advanced
level monographs and theses. If there are any other language abstracts
available, they will appear after the English abstract.

The Accession Number field (AN) contains a unique sequential six-digit
number assigned to each document.

au           Author [Phrase Indexed]

The Author (AU) field contains the names of individual authors,
editors or compilers.  Individual author names appear in the format of last name followed
by initials, and should be searched without using periods, as in
Smith AB.

The Book Analytic Source, Total Pages (BP) field This field contains
the total number of pages in an indexed book analytic.

cc           Classification Subject Codes [Word Indexed]

The Classification Subject (CC) field is a 6-digit numeric code
representing subject headings that allow easy access to general
subject groupings of database records. 

These codes are expanded in four languages: English, French,
Italian and Spanish; and can be seen in English Classification Subject
(CE) field, Italian Classification Subject (CT) field, French
Classification Subject (CF) field, and Spanish Classification Subject
(CS) field.

The English Classification Subject (CE) field is the expansion
of the 6-digit numeric code representing subject headings that
allow easy access to general subject groupings of database records
in English.

The Conference Information (CI) field is used for conference proceedings
or for separate documents or articles which were delivered at a
conference, symposium, or congress.


cp           Country Code [Word Indexed]

The Country of Publication (CP) field can be searched by a three-digit
numeric code (which indicates the country of publication) or by country name.


fa           Foreign Abstract [Word Indexed]
             aerobie anaerobie.fa.

This index contains the French, Italian, and Spanish abstracts. These
are descriptive abstracts used to help the reader decide if the
article is appropriate. Important concepts are covered, and the
abstracts enhance the subject heading used. Here are a couple of
search tips.

1. Many of the words are cognates of each other.  So to see more
articles, you should pick the obvious cognates.  

2. There is overlap in that many of the French, Italian, or Spanish
words are the same.  If you are looking for Spanish only, you
might want to limit by language instead of picking from this list.

fc	     Foreign Classification Subjects [Phrase Indexed]

The Foreign Classification Subject (FC) field is the expansion of
the 6-digit numeric code representing subject headings that allow
easy access to general subject groupings of database records in
French, Italian, and Spanish.

             sistema cardiovascular.fd.

The Foreign Descriptor (FD) field is the phrase indexing for all
subject headings in French, Italian, or Spanish.

hs          Disability Subject Headings [Word Indexed]
            "617".hs.
            diving.hs.

The Disability Subject Heading (HS) field contains the subject
headings used in the publication "Sport and Recreation for the
Disabled." This index can be searched by 3-digit code or by phrase.

hw	    Heading Words [Word Indexed]
            horse.hw.

The Subject Heading Word (HW) field contains a word index list of
all of the subject headings that were phrase indexed. This includes
Subject Headings, Disability Subject Headings, and Classification
Codes in all languages.

jn	    Journal Name [Phrase Indexed]
            equus.jn.

The Journal Name (JN) field contains the name of the journal in
which the article was printed.

jw	    Journal Words [Word Indexed]
            medicine.jw.

The Journal Word (JW) field contains individual words from every
journal name in SPORTDiscus.  

Stopwords such as "the" or "of" are not included. This field is
used to retrieve every occurrance of a journal which includes a
particular word, such as "marketing."

le           Level [Word Indexed]
             advanced.le.
             a.le.

The Level (LE) field indicates the level of difficulty of the material.
This is accepted as a very subjective decision. If the material is of
a practical nature, easily understood by a non-specialist, it is given
the code B for basic. If the material appears to be original scientific
research, it receives the code A. Level I is reserved for well-written
material that supplies more than basic information but is not quite of
a research level. This field can be search by code or name.

The Language (LG) field contains the language or languages of the document.  
It is possible to have more than one language assigned to a document.  
It is searchable by language abbreviation or by the full name of the language.

lo   	     Location [Word Indexed]
             OOFS.lo.

The Location (LO) field indicates the physical location of the
document in SIRC's collection as well as any other indexing source
of the document. All documents held by the Sport Information
Resource Centre (SIRC) have OOFS entered in this field. OOFS is the
Canadian library symbol assigned to SIRC by the National Library of
Canada. The international symbol for SIRC is CaOOFS, but only OOFS
has been used. When records have been indexed and submitted by
international contributors a code representing that organization is
included in this field and the code ID is entered into the SS field.

ma	    E-mail Addresses [Word Indexed]
            edu.ma.

The E-Mail Address (MA) field is a combined index of the Author's
E-mail and Publisher's E-mail address. These addresses can be used
to reach the appropriate people.

no          Identifying Numbers [Word Indexed]
            gv583.no.

The Identifying Numbers (NO) field contains all the numbers that go
into identifying an individual work. They include the ERIC Document
Number, the ISBN and ISSN, the Library of Congress Catalog Number (LC),
the Canadian Library of Congress Catalog Number (LCCN), the Participant
Document Number, the Serial ID number, the SIRLS Document, and ID numbers
and the Dissertation Abstracts number.

The Notes (NT) field contains useful information that cannot be
placed in other specific fields.

pp           Place of Publication [Word Indexed]
             canberra.pb.

The Place of Publication (PP) field contains the information
pertaining to place of publication for a document. This can
include city, state or country information.

pr           Publisher's URL Address

The Publisher's URL Address (UR) field contains the web address for the
publisher. This field is indexed under WP.

pt           Publication Type [Word Indexed]
             periodical.pt.
             s.pt.

The Publication Type (PT) field contains the document type, as in
monograph, article, CD-ROM, and so on. This field can be searched by 
code letter or by name.

pu	     Publisher [Word Indexed]
             Penguin.pu.

The Publisher (PU) field contains the name of the publisher for
the publication.

rf	     Number of References [Word Indexed]
             5.rf.

The Number of References (RF) field indicates the number of
bibliographic references supplied by an author at the end of a document.

rr	     Related Record Number [Phrase Indexed]
             645376.rr.

The Related Record Number(RR) are the combined Excerpt/Chapter Record
Numbers and the Monograph Record Numbers.

sa	     SIRC Record Number [Phrase Indexed]
             111465.sa.

The SIRC Article Number (SA) field contains a unique number used
for ordering copies of documents through the SPORTExpress service.

sh	     Subject Headings [Phrase Indexed]
             horseback riding.sh.

The Subject Heading (SH) field contains the English descriptors
assigned for subjects, geographical locations, sport associations,
sport teams and leagues, corporate bodies, and personal names. All
these, except for corporate bodies and personal names, are taken from
the SPORT Thesaurus.

The Series Note (SN) field contains information relating the document
if it is part of a series.

The Sub Database (SS) field contains subsets of the SPORTDiscus
database. This field can be searched by letter abbreviation or by name.

tc	     Table of Contents [Word Indexed]

The Table of Contents (TC) field contains the chapter numbers and
titles for a monograph.

ti           Title [Word Indexed]
             anabolic steroids.ti.

The Title (TI) field contains the title of the record. Common
words such as a, an, the, etc. are not indexed.

up           Update Code [Phrase Indexed]
             199611.up.

The Update (UP) field contains the year and month the data was
sent to the vendor. This field can be used to find the newest data.

The URL Address (UR) field contains the web address for the actual 
article refered to by the record. This field is indexed under WP.

wp	     Web Page Address [Word Indexed]

The Web Page Address (WP) indexes all web pages addresses listed
in the database. They include the Publisher's URL, indexed websites
or websites for the full text of a document. This field does not display.
