Accession Number RGA91009717 Authors Van Biema, David. Title The greatest show in India (work of M. E. Mark). Source Life. v. 14, Feb. 1991, p. 48-56. Subject Headings Circus -- India -- Photographs and photography Personal Subject Mark, Mary Ellen Abstract There are rumors in India that its circuses, which once gave small towns their only window on the outside world, might not survive. Their audience is being lost to the increasing popularity of television. During the last 30 years, almost three dozen circuses in India have gone bankrupt because of decreasing revenues and increasing overhead costs. Some observers are calling for the circus to be nationalized before it disappears. Photographs by Mary Ellen Mark, who followed Indian circuses for eight months, are reproduced. Source Barrons. v. 73, Feb. 22 1993, p. 8-9. Subject Headings Stock market United States -- Economic conditions United States -- Economic policy Personal Subject Mintz, Walter Stein, Howard Wilson, Robert Dalio, Ray Clinton, Bill -- Addresses, messages, etc. SIC Code 6200 (Security and commodity brokers), 9611 (Admin. of general economic programs) Abstract In a televised address to Congress Wednesday night, President Bill Clinton sought to persuade the lawmakers and, more importantly, the American people, that his proposed combination of higher taxes and spending cuts would ensure sustainable economic growth, create more jobs, and cut long-term interest rates. Democrats cheered the plan, Republicans jeered it, and polls suggest that a majority of Americans support it. Wall Street's reaction was mixed: The bond market liked what it heard, but the stock market was nervous, having fallen sharply on Tuesday due to anticipatory anxiety. In an interview, analyst, research head, and portfolio manager Walter Mintz; private investor Robert Wilson; Dreyfus chairman Howard Stein; and Bridgewater Associates president Ray Dalio discuss the program's likely impact on the economy and the financial markets. They expect a slight negative impact, no noticeable effect, stagflation, and a small drag on the economy, respectively.
